Job Description

Fisheries Research Technician Position

We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for a fisheries research technician position at the Auburn University School of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences. The technician will primarily assist with a research project on the population dynamics and management of freshwater catfish stocks in Alabama. Our staff and students work with natural resource agency biologists, travel widely for professional activities, and maintain a team approach to research.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with field surveys of fish populations using electrofishing gear and nets.
  • Process biological samples including fish otoliths for age determination, diets, and gonads.
  • Documents results and observations in writing as well as presenting results to others.
  • Operate and maintain trucks, boats, sampling gear and laboratory equipment.

Qualifications:

Level I:

  • Bachelor's degree in fisheries or the biological sciences.

Level II:

  • Bachelor's degree in fisheries or the biological sciences and 2 years of experience in research practices and protocols.

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED FOR EXPERIENCE: Yes, when a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Desired qualifications:

An interest in fisheries management and population dynamics research; experience with using and maintaining boats, nets, and other gear; effective working in a team setting and under remote supervision; strong desire to ultimately pursue an M.S. degree in fisheries.
